Kazakhstan is the 9th largest country in the world (four times the size of Texas). It lies in the northern region of Central Asian Republics. The country got independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
While the largest city Almaty was established in 2018 (population >1.7 million), the oldest city of the country dates back to 2nd and 3rd BC. The government of Kazakhstan has brought systematic reforms and changes that contribute to the country’s best rank record of #25. The country has seen major improvements over the years and stands on top of neighboring countries that include Austria, Iceland, Austria, Spain, and Japan. Over the years, the country has become a major travel hotspot and a go-to place for aspiring medical students across the world for its Top Ranking Medical Universities and Hospitals.
About the city
Formerly known as Semipalatinsk, Semey is a city in Kazakhstan founded in 1718 as a Russian fort. The city moved to its current site in 1778 to protect it from frequent floods. After Kazakhstan’s independence in 1991, the name of the city was changed to Semey. The major economic activities of the city are food processing and other similar industries. The biggest reason why the city sees a flood of students from around the world is due to its education facilities that include Medical schools and teacher-training centers. The city also offers wonderful sceneries and unique experiences to travelers. There are several attractions such as Landmarks, Museums, Fun & Games, Nature Parks, and Zoos making it a must-visit place for those with wanderlust.
Security & Safety
Kazakhstan is a safe place for travelers as well as foreign students staying in the country. When compared with Russia and Eurasia, the country ranks #1 in terms of peacefulness. Kazakhstan is a hospitable country with extremely friendly locals. The locals are tolerant towards different religions and ethnicities, especially in the urban areas.
The transportation system is well-developed in Kazakhstan and features facilities like the train, minibuses, intercity buses, car & bike rentals, and taxis. There are plenty of public transport options in the country.
The country’s only metro system is available in Almaty. The facility is cheap and truly a fast way to get around. Currently, the usefulness of the metro is limited but the system is being planned for other cities as well.
Buses are the most convenient way to travel in Kazakhstan. They are a bit slower than taxis but they are a much cheaper option. The only downsides are that the buses don’t stick to a particular schedule and the majority of the drivers speak in Russian making it difficult for foreign travelers.
Travelers usually prefer trains after taxis as they provide an easy commute both locally and regionally. The trains in Kazakhstan can even take you to neighboring countries like China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Uzbekistan. Taking the train in Kazakhstan is inexpensive but a bit time-consuming.
Taxi services are easy to find in Kazakhstan at bus or train stations. They are an expensive option but the cost can be reduced by sharing rides. Just like the buses, you may also find the taxi drivers speaking in Russian. So, it’d be a good idea to brush up on your Russian skills to avoid getting ripped off.
The impact of close contact with Russians for two decades can be easily seen in Kazakhs. But the culture of Kazakhstan heavily reflects the nomadic lifestyle of tribes from history who roamed the Kazakh steppe. This gives its people unique traditions, a unique worldview, and eclectic customs. The 19th and 20th centuries saw a major development when the locals adopted a more sedentary lifestyle. But the nomadic spirit can still be seen in the art forms and traditions of this beautiful nation. Some of the cultural experiences of this country include its literature, crafts, musical heritage based on folklore, clothing, and exciting horse games.
Kazakhstan has a continental climate. This means that the country experiences very cold during winters and extremely hot summers. A typical January sees a temperature of 10 degrees below the freezing temperature, while the temperature in July can go well above 30 degrees Celsius. To enjoy the country, April to June and September to October is probably the best time.
